What to Expect at Your NRP Skills Check Off

  1. Preparation: Prior to your NRP skills check off, you'll be expected to complete an online portion of the course. This will cover the theoretical aspects of neonatal resuscitation, including understanding the principles of resuscitation, identifying the steps of the NRP algorithm, and learning about the equipment used in neonatal resuscitation.
    • Essentials covers lessons 1 through 4 of the textbook, which includes the critical skill of positive pressure ventilation. Anyone involved in the care of a newborn should take NRP Essentials. The NRP 8th edition Essentials curriculum includes use of the laryngeal mask and orogastric tube. Each facility may determine if the NRP Essentials provider is also responsible for CPAP administration in the delivery room.
    • Advanced covers lessons 1 through 11 of the textbook. Advanced is appropriate for those who attend births and are responsible for anticipated resuscitation of a newborn with known risk factors, and for those who participate in neonatal resuscitation beyond positive pressure ventilation.
  1. Hands-On Training: During the NRP skills check off, you'll have the opportunity to apply what you've learned in a controlled, simulated environment. Our experienced instructors will guide you through various scenarios that mimic real-life emergencies, allowing you to practice and refine your skills.
  2. Assessment: Your instructor will assess your ability to perform various neonatal resuscitation procedures, including initial steps of newborn care, positive-pressure ventilation, chest compressions, and medication administration. You'll also be evaluated on your ability to work as part of a resuscitation team.
  3. Feedback and Improvement: After the assessment, your instructor will provide constructive feedback on your performance. This is an opportunity for you to ask questions, clarify any doubts, and improve your skills.
  4. Certification: Upon successful completion of the NRP skills check-off, you'll receive your NRP certification from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). This certification is globally recognized and can enhance your credibility as a healthcare professional. Remember, the goal of the NRP Skills Check Off is not just to pass a test, but to equip you with the knowledge and skills necessary to save lives. At CPR Training Austin, we are committed to providing you with the training you need to feel confident and competent in your abilities.
